Late-night screenings of “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” earned more than $2.2 million at the North American box office on Tuesday, the movie’s first night out.
The film, which followed Michael as he prepared for his 50 comeback concerts in London before his death, saw incredible results for its first day, according to Sony spokesmen.
In the film, viewers get to see what went on behind the scenes while Michael planned his comeback shows, including filmed segments, pyrotechnics, dance numbers, and acrobatics. The scenes were originally meant for Michael’s own archives, but after his death concert promoters decided to make the material available to the public.
“This Is It” opened in 99 countries on Wednesday, and its matinees have already doubled Tuesday’s earnings.
